Wheelchair Batteries
The batteries of wheelchairs are different from that of car. The battery in car only starts the engine of the car. The battery of wheelchair is charged one time in a day and large amount of electricity is spent on the running of wheelchair. The battery of wheelchair has a special type of battery which is called deep-cycle battery. The battery cannot be damaged if it is completely discharged and normally a good variety of battery can go for a long time if it is kept as close to full charge as possible. Many users have the habit to charge the battery at night time in order to keep the full charge. Now there is a new automatic charger available in the market which avoids the risk of overcharging. If you use the wheelchair occasionally, then atleast the battery should be charged once a month. And if the wheelchair is used daily then the battery should be charged daily.
If you have a good variety of battery, then exactly it goes for a long time but actually the usage of battery decides the life of a battery. Mostly a battery lasts for about a year and if it is used only indoor then the life of battery may prolong which can be two years. If the battery of wheelchair is lagging at the end of trip, then it means that it is weak. A new battery does not show such sign. Now you can purchase wheelchairs online. There is a lot of websites and you can search through such websites to get a fine quality of battery.
There are two types of batteries; wet battery and gel battery. In wet battery, distilled water is added after every two months. If the level of water falls below the level of the battery plates, then it damages the battery permanently. The adding of water is a difficult process. There is no need to add water in gel battery and it eliminates corrosion problems. The capacity of gel battery is 20% less than wet battery.
There are three types of batteries; wet-cell, gel-cell, and AGM, used in power electric wheelchair. Wet-cell is cheaper and the lightest type of battery. There is lower risk of overcharging of wet-cell. You cannot use wet-cell on airplane. It can easily be leaked. Due to this leakage, it can be exploded and cause corrosion to wheelchair and its wiring. The gel battery is leak-proof and there is no need of its maintenance. Its usage is allowed in airline travelling and its life is longer than that of wet-cell. The main disadvantage of gel battery is that it is heavy in weight and it can be overcharged.
The new technology in the battery is in the shape of AGM battery. It is maintenance-free, spill-proof, shock resistant and you can use in airline travel. These batteries are heavier and most costly batteries of electric wheelchair. If you want that the life of your battery is prolonged, then the best way is to keep the battery in cool and dry place.
