There are three types of wheelchair batteries available in the market. Wet battery comes first in which chemical reaction takes place between lead and sulphuric acid and it creates electric charge. Distilled water is used to fill this type of battery but it can cause leakage. These batteries are cheaper but sometimes they require maintenance.

The 2nd type of battery is gel battery which has a mixture of sulphuric acid, fumed silica, pure water, and phosphoric acid. There is no liquid used in the gel batteries. These batteries are expensive and heavier than wet batteries. AGM is new type of battery which has an absorbent glass mat present within the plates which is soaked with electrolyte. The life of these batteries is longer as compared to other batteries but these batteries are too expensive.



There are three types of battery chargers you can purchase for your battery. It is very important that you have the right charger for your battery because different dual modes of some chargers let you charge either a gel battery or a wet battery. If you have no idea about the battery charger, then consult with your dealer and find out the right charger for your battery. If you have already an old chair and you want to purchase a new chair then you should be aware that you need a different battery. If you have the old charger and you don’t want to buy a new charger, then consult with the manufacturer that you have the old charger whether it is suitable or not for the new chair.
